Intention and the Right Actions: Prioritize and Postpone
The first tip of our Intention and the Right Actions series was to practice some form of ‘morning pages’ to start your day, such as a task list for the day. This third tip goes further and urges you to prioritize tasks and postpone those which can and should wait. When considering the many tasks ahead of her each morning, Theresa Forman president of the McMillan Creative Agency posits that “How is it possible to get it all done? The answer is simple: it isn’t.” Forman as an answer for this in the form of long-term prioritization. Forman sums up her approach in the following manner:
To deal with my day-to-day responsibilities and to focus more easily on what really matters, my daily habit is to apply a ruthless guiding principle to prioritize my to-do list each morning; I ask myself one simple question: ‘Will this still matter in a day? A week? A month? A year?’
This is not a strategy for justifying procrastination rather the recognition that there are only so many hours in a day, week, month and year.
