Making Change In Your Community Today And Every Day
This week we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s racial and economic justice by focusing on ways to create change in your workplace community and beyond. If you find yourself wondering about how to continue working towards making the world a better place, don’t limit your contribution to just one day out of the year, to Martin Luther King Jr. Day alone. You have the ability to create change within your workplace and beyond each and every day. Every small step you take adds up to creating a better world. Check out the resources below for ways to make a difference within your communities throughout Boston as well as those you’ve connected with virtually amidst our present
The Americorps website succinctly explains the history and impact of this holiday as well as providing visitors with a way to input their city or zip code to find local opportunities: “Observed each year on the third Monday in January as ‘a day on, not a day off,’ MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. AmeriCorps has been charged with leading this effort for the past quarter century…Together we encourage you to engage in volunteer service in honor of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service…Make a commitment to serve in your community on MLK Day and throughout 2021.” If you were working yesterday or otherwise unable to participate, don’t fret about being unable to participate in community service activities. Substantial, large-scale change doesn’t happen overnight. It truly does require putting in the work each and every day. Which is why we especially appreciate that Americorps also provides resources for other civic engagement opportunities. Make sure to input your zip code ASAP to find ways to connect with your neighbors in collectively striving to achieve a better world throughout all the rest of 2021 and beyond.
If you’re looking for a different type of anytime inspiration for making change, don’t miss the Museum of Fine Arts’s MLK Day Community Celebration. This recorded, virtual event celebrates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by “[bringing] together nonprofit, corporate, and community leaders to share their personal reflections on the current impact and lasting legacies of Dr. King and Mrs. Coretta Scott King.” The “Voices on King” program also features a musical performance by Danny Rivera and an original poem by Boston’s Poet Laureate, Porsha Olayiwola, providing you with even more inspiration by allowing you to surround yourself with art, culture, and community geared towards enacting meaningful, lasting change. We appreciate the MFA’s wide array of highlighted speakers and performers, reflecting the breadth of methods for making an impact. Let yourself take inspiration from these necessary voices to create even more avenues for addressing racial and economic injustices.
