Performing a Dress Rehearsal May Help You Land The Job!
The Contemporaries Team recently provided job seekers with 10 Tips for Career Success in 2025. Today, we will be focusing on Tip #4 – Performing a dress rehearsal for your interview.
Post COVID, many employers chose to switch to virtual interviews rather than in person meetings. Understand that during remote interviews, candidates will be judged the same way they would be during a face to face encounter.
In order to make the best impression and crush the remote interview, make sure you prepare via a dress rehearsal.
Do:
- Make sure that you are able to access the virtual venue in advance. If the exchange will be taking place via a Zoom or Google Teams meeting, familiarize yourself with the program and make sure you are able to access the event link prior to the interview.
- Decide what backdrop you will be sitting in front of before the meeting. Keep it as professional as possible. A blank wall is better than having potential employers view posters, political books, or personal mementos in the background.
If the meeting is going to be in person
Do:
- Make sure to map out your travel arrangements before it counts, or visit the site in advance. There is nothing worse than arriving late for an interview with a potential employer.
- If you take public transportation and there is a documented problem, a Hiring Manager will not hold the incident against you. But if it is not documented (and employers can simply read the news to check) or indicating you woke up late or saying you did not know how long it would take, does nothing in terms of getting you closer to being hired.
For both in-person and virtual interviews:
- Plan in advance what you will be wearing for the event. Don’t wait until the last minute to find out the shirt you were planning to wear is soiled or full of wrinkles.
- And, even if the interview is virtual, do not assume the encounter is casual. Dress the same way you would if you were meeting the Supervisor or employer in person.
- Be sure to research the organization you are applying for. Know what their mission, vision, and objectives are, as well as what products and services they offer. The more knowledge you bring to an interview, the better.
- Be sure to keep the meeting professional and finally, don;t forget to thank the interviewer for taking the time to speak with you.
