When COVID-19 hit in 2020, people all around the United States felt scared, confused, and isolated. Individuals had to stay indoors all the time, missing out on many experiences such as making new friends, celebrating milestones, and other life events. This caused many to feel lonely, depressed and anxious about the changes happening around them. The only remedy for some was to adopt a pet from a local rescue shelter.  In turn, it gave them a new sense of purpose and meaning.

Pets can bring companionship and happiness to people. This helped many who felt alone during the pandemic. WIth a new pet, folks will have a forever friend to keep them company. Animals will always show you unconditional love and acceptance. This behavior can help people who suffer from anxiety and depression. Just knowing a pet is waiting for you at home can completely change your day.

Animals can also bring new challenges and adventures. For instance, when adopting a dog, a person will have a reason to visit their local park. This is a potential opportunity for owners to get out of their comfort zones, talk to people, and make new friends. Even when social distancing is needed, taking a pet to the park can bring a person a sense of peace and fulfillment. Adopting a pet also means you are helping local shelters.

When thinking about a pet, individuals should consider adopting from their local sanctuaries. These rescue animals can increase a person’s self-esteem and confidence. By bringing a new dog or cat home, you are helping reduce the population at the animal rescue center. This means more animals can be saved because there will be more space. People should consider saving older animals’ lives because these potential pets will not have to be euthanized. Adopting a furry friend is more than just helping an animal but helping yourself and your community, too.

They fill our lives with unconditional happiness, love, support, and relief.  Adopting a pet does not just involve a cat or a dog. A pet can be a fish, turtle, rabbit, bird, or even bearded dragon. We gain a beloved new family member when we save an animal, and life is a bit more interesting and enjoyable when you have a companion to share it with you.
