Artificial Intelligence may play a prominent role in the workplace for such functions as analyzing large amounts of data, performing repetitive tasks, streamlining processes, and detecting certain system behaviors which may indicate fraud or cyber breaches.
However, when it comes to selecting the right candidate for a particular job, AI may not be your best option for several reasons.
On Resumes
AI will review a candidate’s resume and scan for key words and skills, and sometimes experience, and decide whether the person is rejected and weeded out at the initial stage of the selection process.
However, some individuals do not include all of their skills or experiences on their resume and the document may not tell the whole story.
It is only through speaking with the person that a Recruiter may find out the candidate did in fact, possess the skill sets and experiences although they failed to list them on their resume.
On Selection Process
According to Google’s AI Overview – some AI systems will also take the information they have on an individual – mainly from the resume – and “predict a candidate’s future performance and cultural fit,” based on a variety of factors.
At Contemporaries, we not only get to know the clients, and the company culture and work environment, but we also speak directly to each candidate before determining whether to move them on to a position, and only place them in a job which they would be the right fit for, and whereby that could succeed.
The Best and the Worst
Resumes should not be the only factor when it comes to deciding which candidates are eliminated and which ones will move ahead in the hiring process.
Some of the best resumes we’ve seen, based on 27+ years of experience, come from candidates which we could never, in good faith, pass along to our clients.
Other resumes which have not looked so great, were actually from some of our highest quality of employees, most of whom launched their careers through Contemporaries.
It is the small details which AI could miss that may lead to a bad hire,
For instance,
If a candidate is asked to call at 10 a.m. for an interview and does not dial in until 10:15, chances are that unless they have a very good reason, the individual will have trouble meeting other deadlines.
Or, if the Recruiter calls the candidate at Noon and the person sounds as if they just rolled out of bed, this could also lead to issues down the line.
Contemporaries Recruiters use a holistic approach when it comes to deciding which candidates would be a good fit for what positions. Because of this more personalized and human approach, our Recruiters have enjoyed a very high success rate in job to employee matches.
Before opting for recruiting job candidates through AI, you may want to ask yourself a few questions. Such as, whether you’d trust the system to decide your own future, as AI can make mistakes, or whether AI can guarantee that you won’t be missing out on someone great.
