Numerous of articles have been written lately stating how a large majority of young candidates do not show up for job interviews, or even make it to the first day of work. This is not a trend which has been seen in past years, particularly within the staffing industry.

While these individuals may be thinking that this is a good move on their part, it may have long lasting repercussions which could harm them greatly in the future.

In the workplace, credibility and accountability take center stage. Both are lost when a candidate decides to ignore a pre-arranged interview, or a commitment to start a new job.

We understand that time is valuable for the individual as well as the Hiring Manager or Recruiter. If the candidate opts not to call or not show up, that is a fact which will follow the candidate forever. When one agrees to an assignment or accepts a job offer and then does not show up, the same can be said.
It’s called cutting off your future options.

Let’s say that a person applied for a particular position and was offered an interview although the individual was not too enthusiastic about the job. Once the commitment has been made, it is better to follow through with the interview. Or, cancel ahead of time and be honest as to why you are cancelling.
If the individual just ignores the interview or a job offer, they may face unintended consequences.

If their “ideal or dream” position at the same company or organization is advertised in the future, chances are excellent that they will never be given an interview or job offer, because of their past behavior. The Hiring Manager, Recruiter, or Owner will go back and read the notes about the person and find that they were unreliable. Most times employers will not give them a second chance, and why should they? There are plenty of other candidates out there who will be accountable and conscientious. Those are the gems most Hiring Managers and Recruiters want on their team.
