Maintaining a Strong Work Ethic

The Contemporaries Team recently provided job seekers with 10 Tips for Career Success in 2025. Today, we will be focusing on Tip #2 – Maintaining a strong work ethic.

A strong work ethic means different things to different people. However, there are some constants in the working world as to what possessing a strong work ethic means and doesn’t mean.

For instance, it means,

  1. Not only showing up on the job every day, but being punctual, engaged, professional, and doing all your work to the best of your ability and always with integrity.
  2. Meeting all your deadlines, even if it means working overtime. And, if for some reason there is going to be a delay, reaching out to your supervisor or Team Leader beforehand and explaining what is going on and why there may be a hold up. Allowing them time to make alternative arrangements.
  3. Being a good and reliable team player by working cooperatively with your colleagues and Team Leader. And, if you are finished with your own tasks and duties, jumping in to help others when needed.
  4. Staying organized, prioritizing your work and time, remaining dedicated to the tasks at hand, and taking the job seriously.
  5. Remaining flexible, responsible, disciplined, and always double checking your work, which may be as simple as spell checking a document before submitting it to a Supervisor or re-reading an email before it is sent out.

Employees who consistently follow these steps and go above and beyond the minimum requirements, are usually the ones who are fast tracked for promotions, awarded raises, have more job stability in the workforce, and are provided with new opportunities that help them advance their careers. If by chance you are in a contract or temporary position, by following these simple guidelines, you are almost going to guarantee securing a future permanent position.

If you are lucky enough to land a job, no matter whether it is your dream post or just a position to help you pay the bills, by throwing yourself into the work, tasks, and duties, you will not only earn the respect and admiration of your peers and supervisors, but at the very least it will also allow you to gain valuable experience and a glowing reference for all future endeavors.
