The Contemporaries Team recently provided job seekers with 10 Tips for Career Success in 2025. Today, we will be focusing on Tip #5 – Remaining Available on the Employer’s Schedule.

By Remaining Available on the Employer’s Schedule, not having them work around yours, shows the commitment you have to the job and organization itself. Being flexible and open to a potential employer’s schedule – whether it is for an interview or starting a new job is a chance to present yourself as an individual who is willing to work as a team member. While it would be nice to delay a start date or an interview time, the most successful candidates will accommodate a Hiring Manager, proving how truly seriously they take their career and how much they do want the job.

Candidates sometimes are under the impression that a potential employer will wait for them once they have expressed an interest in hiring a specific individual. However, with few exceptions, everyone is dispensable when it comes to the workforce.

Even if a Hiring Manager agrees to a short delay in a start date, they may feel put out somewhat because they’ve already decided on when they feel they need someone to start.

In terms of interviews, if the candidate cannot accommodate the employer’s schedule, there is a very good chance that someone else will be able to make themselves available to take up the interview slot.

If you have a pre-planned vacation or other commitment which cannot be moved, it may be best to job hunt and apply after that period. If you have an appointment, it would be best – if you are scheduled to start work or attend an interview – to either reschedule the appointment on your time, or not apply or say you are available until after the appointment.

A good rule of thumb to think about is that if you are not flexible with your time, chances are good that there will be another candidate or candidates who would jump at the opportunity of meeting the needs of the employer and on their terms.
