Remembering the Basics

by Jun 6, 2018

There are some skills that are so basic, it’s easy to forget them. But just because they’re basic, that doesn’t mean they aren’t important.

Rachel Weingarten highlights some of these “basics” in her article here. She also provides some tips on how to hone these basics and use them to succeed at work. Here are the ones we thought were most critical:

  • Communication: Communicating effectively with those around you is a crucial part of any job, and nearly any situation or interaction. Even though shorthand and emojis are commonplace in this day and age, writing skills are more important than ever and can never be forgotten about. If you want to improve your writing skills, Weingarten suggests reading and writing more, as well as using new technology (with apps and sites such as Grammarly) to hone these skills. Mastery of communication (both written AND verbal) will get you far in the professional world.
  • Patience: The world we live and work in seems to be zooming past us at every moment, with instant messages, emails, and other very fast communications. It’s easy to become impatient when everything around you tends to happen so fast, but learning patience is extremely important. Patience allows us to step back and see a situation without being distracted by the frustration impatience brings. Also, it’ll help you relate much better to your coworkers and peers, and will help you work better together.
