The fundamental role of the team leader

When you take charge of a team, it is of paramount importance to understand member capabilities in relation to the project or team objectives. Once this is understood, its the role of the team leader to ensure that the conditions are set and implemented for utilizing individual capabilities optimally for achieving team objective effectively.  As Dino Ruta and Paolo Guenzi observe in their book on Leading Teams, “The fundamental job of the person who takes the helm of a team is to make the team’s performance superior to the simple sum of the performances of each team member.”  Finding ways to improve team performance by understanding and better-utilizing team member capabilities is fundamental.
