“It’s not necessarily the smartest person in the room that becomes the CEO, it’s the person who works the hardest and perseveres over adversity.”

In today’s society, more so than decades before, it may appear that being brilliant, having a good idea or luck, or even being in the right place at the right time will land you a top slot in an organization of your choice.
In reality, as Donna Fitzgerald, President and CEO of Contemporaries points out, achieving your career goals and succeeding professionally takes a lot more than intelligence or wishful thinking. As an individual who spent years working in the Human Resources and Staffing industry prior to opening her own business, Ms. Fitzgerald explained that it was a combination of hard work, taking every opportunity available to learn everything she could about her craft and being able to overcome many obstacles that led to her ultimate success.
Too many times, individuals assume that because they went to a top school, received high grades, or were viewed as the top students in their class that doors would miraculously open for them upon graduation. While all those accomplishments are truly admirable and such intelligence should be revered, none of those items mentioned will necessarily translate into a well-paying high-level job.
It is the employee that takes every opportunity to learn, toil, excel, overcome obstacles or problems, and go the extra distance who will be the biggest winner on the professional front.
It’s not necessarily the smartest person in the room that becomes the CEO, it’s the person who works the hardest and perseveres over adversity.
