Sharing Your Workplace Positivity—Remotely

by Mar 24, 2020

Though while working remotely you may be spatially far away from your co-workers, keep in mind that you’re all still connected. Each one of you has something unique to offer up to your organization, your own strengths that contribute to the bigger picture. It can be hard to feel like shining in these unique times. Yet doing so will help boost not just your mood but that of everyone around you—even from afar. Check out the tips from the pros we’ve collected below for ways to keep up your energy while encouraging others to do the same.

Alexander Maasik at Entrepreneur offers up this mood-boosting professional suggestion: “Find ways to celebrate. Connection with people you work with is the key. Be sure to maximize the effect of communication technology and share personal successes as well as professional. And don’t forget to include people you work with in your celebrations. This is where social networks like Facebook can help you out. When we look at Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, you could say this sort of celebration builds up your self-esteem and gives you a feeling of belonging that helps you handle your work.” Save your Facebooking for after you clock out, but do make sure to share those successes! Every bit of good news can help bring a smile to the faces of those around you. It may feel strange to celebrate anything right now, but highlighting your own professional successes is a great way to encourage your friends and co-workers to do the same, sharing the morale boosting with all of your networks.

This positivity trick from Allison Renner at Lifehack can be used at work in-person or remotely: “Teach others what you know. You want to accompany others when they do their jobs, so offer that opportunity to your coworkers. Instead of helping them out only when they ask, offer to teach them what you know so they won’t have to call you all of the time. It might feel good to be needed (talk about job security!), but when you have your own list of tasks to do, being called to help someone else can be inconvenient. You know what they say: ‘Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach him how to fish and you have fed him for a lifetime.’” Pool your resources! And help set all of your colleagues up for success–which will impress both them and your employers by further demonstrating your initiative. There’s no better time than the present to figure out what your professional specialty is within your own work community; make sure that you’re both teaching others what you know and keeping an open mind so that you can learn from others as well. This will uplift everyone.

Hang in there! Sort out what you can control from what you can’t. Keeping a positive mindset will help you tackle all of the tasks that you can accomplish in both your own life and the lives of others. Celebrate those accomplishments! And be sure to share all of the tips and tricks you’re learning along the way with your colleagues. We’ll see you back here tomorrow for our Wednesday Wellness: Positivity edition.
