Cultivating Your Workplace Happiness One Step at a Time

by Aug 25, 2020

As summer winds down, it can be tough to keep your energy up–after all, the sun has been setting earlier and earlier! But that’s all the more reason to let your professional positivity shine even brighter. Even if you can’t wait to curl up with a cup of hot apple cider, we know that transitions can still prove difficult. And everyone has a bad day now and then. No matter how you’re feeling, the important thing is to make sure you’re able to set whatever is happening at a personal level aside so that you can contribute to your overall professional community. It’s okay if that task feels overwhelming! Today we’re turning to the pros for ways to maintain your workplace happiness, one step at a time.

We love this method from Allison Renner at Lifehack for boosting your mood: “Concentrate on one thing at a time. You have a lot of things on your To Do list, but concentrating on one thing at a time will help you be more motivated and focused. If you stay on task until it’s finished, you won’t lose time by multitasking or changing course from one topic to another. By concentrating on one thing at a time, you also are more likely to complete more tasks fully, instead of doing bits and pieces of a bunch of different projects but not finishing any.” Accomplishing tasks feels great! Start by breaking your big tasks down into smaller steps; even though each step might feel tiny, they’re all necessary for achieving your big goal. And crossing each one off will provide you with a burst of positive energy! Focus fully on each step along the way rather than letting yourself get overwhelmed by the big picture. Applying that kind of concentration will also allow you to more quickly cross each task off your to-do list. Achieving this type of professional proficiency also serves as a source of workplace joy.

The pros at Indeed also have a great suggestion to keep up your mood each day at work: “Appreciate the small successes. One of the easiest ways to develop positive thinking at work is to find several small achievements to celebrate each day. Noting successes could help you feel optimistic and more motivated. For example, if you have a major project to finish, focus on the last few tasks you accomplished and be proud that you successfully completed them.” The pros agree with us! Make sure to celebrate the steps you’ve completed along the way to completing your larger projects. Also make sure that you’re also including your co-workers in this mood boosting technique by acknowledging and appreciating their workplace successes as well, no matter how big or small they may seem. Teamwork is key to maintaining a positive workplace atmosphere–for everyone! Each day offers up new opportunities. A surefire way to maintain happiness throughout your work day is to take a moment to appreciate the wins you’ve accumulated.

Remember that every journey you take begins with a single step. And no step is too small to celebrate! Make sure to focus on each task that comes your way rather than panicking. Commit to finishing each component, as they all add up. Acknowledging this growth is a great way to maintain your positive attitude, and acknowledging the hard work and successes of others is a great way to share that positivity. When your team succeeds, you succeed, too. Together your unique strengths can overcome any obstacle. Visit us again tomorrow for a midweek mood boost with our Wednesday Wellness: Happy edition!
