Lighting The Way In Your Professional Environment

Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful long weekend. After that extra day of rest, we’re re-charged and ready to provide you with our latest round of tips and tricks for personal and professional success. In honor of Presidents’ Day (as well as the spring that is quickly approaching!), today we’re discussing ways to serve as a guiding light in your workplace. Check out what the pros below have to say on ways to hone your leadership skills–and then to let those strengths shine through.
Jo Miller at The Muse offers up this handy suggestion: “Deliver Superior Performance. Don’t just meet expectations; exceed them. Every time. Being recognized as someone who possesses high potential starts with superior performance.” As a first step, make sure you’re doing a stellar job at the duties that are already assigned to you. And then be the one to set the bar high–to set the gold standard for you and all of your co-workers. Delivering your best efforts is a surefire method to inspire those around you while also signalling to your bosses that you’re ready to take on even more responsibilities and challenges. So aim high and shine bright! If you’re ever unsure about the quality of your work, remember that you can always ask your colleagues and employers for their input. That will also display your willingness to listen and ability to incorporate feedback, which demonstrate leadership skills as well.
Yun Siang Long and Kelly Kuehn at Work It Daily also support such an approach. One of their top workplace leadership tips is “Take On More Responsibility At Work. You want to be a leader at work, learn to take responsibility for anything that you’re interested in, and own it. That also means that as long as you participate in that project, you influence whether it fails or succeeds. Learn to take responsibility for not just the good things, but also the bad things. Take ownership of your mistakes, and know it’s okay to be wrong. You cannot learn if you haven’t made any mistakes.” As we’ve said before, you’re only human and humans make mistakes. The way you bounce back from any missteps is what makes the difference. Investing yourself in your projects is a great way to connect with your co-workers; demonstrating your ability to bounce back from any missteps amidst the process is a great way to serve as an inspiration in your professional environment. Remember that each challenge offers up an opportunity to learn and grow. Keep that in mind, and we know you’ll blossom in the new roles and duties that you take on in any workplace community.
Finally, we’ll conclude with some advice you’ve very likely already heard many times in your life: Norman Vincent Peale, author of The Power of Positive Thinking, says “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” Both the moon and the stars offer up guiding light amidst the darkest nights. While we may be in the midst of a grey and snowy February, each day the light lasts a little longer. Let that light recharge you, channeling it into your own work, and let your vibrance inspire others. Join us again tomorrow for a midweek mood boost with our Wednesday Wellness: Light edition!
