Navigating Change In Your Workplace

by Jun 1, 2021

Welcome back! While the imminent return to your typical workplace patterns will be a source of familiarity, it’s impossible to ignore the fact that there have been several changes to the world we live in. For this week, as June kicks off, we’ll be focusing our posts on ways to embrace those new circumstances, to grow stronger and learn from them. Today we’re discussing ways to make changes happen in your life and your workplace rather than letting change solely be something that happens to you. Be sure to take an active role when faced with new paths. Encountering new and different things in your professional environment may seem scary at first, but if you think ahead and plan for different possibilities, you’ll find yourself in the drivers’ seat. The pros we’ve turned to below provide ways to become a pro yourself when it comes to navigating change in your workplace.

Rhett Power at Inc. offers up this suggestion: “Make Change While you Can, Before Change Makes You. It is better to initiate changes ourselves using free will than to let our life progress down a negative path until change affects us in a dramatic way. When you are consciously aware of change, it is much easier. Explore the world and the endless possibilities available to you. Find new opportunities, be brave and face fear. The world isn’t as scary as you might think and there are lots of things out there that are potentially life enhancing but you have to explore them. Your attitude toward life is affected by your ability to embrace change. If change happens to you, rather than you influencing that change, you are much more likely to feel like you are being dragged through life. Embrace change with a calm and relaxed mind. Know where you are going and what you are setting out to accomplish. The clearer you picture these changes, the more motivated you will be.” Be proactive rather than reactive! Thinking ahead and taking an extra moment to remember that you have the strength to get through any situation will help bolster your ability to keep calm in the face of any obstacle. When navigating change in your workplace, positivity is key. Contributing your positive energy to your workplace will result in more positive coworkers, which will create an overall more pleasant and productive professional environment.

We also love this trick from Carol Phillips at the New Hampshire Business Review: “Be realistic: Don’t picture the perfect transition scenario and then struggle when issues arise. A perfect path from ‘A to B’ is highly unlikely. The best planners are those who anticipate challenges, plan for them and prepare for the unexpected. Looking in only one direction leaves you with tunnel vision. Be on the lookout for positive ways to solve problems along the way. Unexpected problems should be viewed as valuable indicators that the plan needs to be adjusted…” Use the knowledge you’ve gained throughout your time at your workplace (as well as the experience you’ve accumulated in working from home) to expand your horizons when it comes to moving through transitions. Keep your mind open to the opportunities that exist all around you. Flexibility is key when it comes to both navigating and creating change. Though your contributions to your workplace may seem small, know that they add up, and that they have a huge impact on your professional community. Maintaining a sense of balance will allow you to

Finding the right frame of mind is key to navigating changes in your workplace. Be prepared, positive, and realistic. Though change may seem scary, you don’t have to let it overwhelm you. You can also view a return to your on-site work location as a way to refresh your professional energy rather than a challenge. We know that you can do this! Every change presents an opportunity. And our mid-week Wednesday Wellness: Change edition will help you keep that in mind, so make sure to visit us again tomorrow!
