You Just Got Promoted! Now What?
Congratulations on the promotion! Perhaps you’ve earned a new title with new responsibilities, or you’ve been hired permanently. At Contemporaries, we know how exciting that is since 90% of our people go perm with the clients we send them to.
Whether you’ve been hired permanently or you’ve moved up the ladder internally, you should be proud of yourself. You’ve probably worked hard to prove yourself to get you into this new role. But now that you have it, what’s next?
Jane Burnett reminds us that once you get that promotion, you have to show your supervisors and colleagues why you’ve earned it. In her article, she gives some suggestions on how to continue to impress your boss once you get that promotion.
- Expand your horizons: Use this time to show that you’re looking to learn and grow, as well as take on more responsibilities. By doing this, you’re demonstrating that you realize that you have more to deliver and that you’ve going to live up to your supervisor’s expectations of you in your new role. Taking initiative is always going to reflect positively, as long as you’re not stepping on anyone else’s toes.
- Know your role and your place: This one may seem obvious, but it’s critical that you deeply understand your new job and how it differs from your previous role. Ask for expectations from your boss, and make sure you thoroughly understand what’s expected of you. As with any new job, when you’re promoted/hired perm, you’re being watched closely in the first few months. Think of at least the first three months as a probationary period.
- Observe and learn: While this is a time to take initiative and prove yourself, it’s also a time to step back and learn from others. Know when to observe your colleagues, boss, and situations and take those opportunities to fine tune your work.
Congratulations, and on to bigger and better things. Use these tips to help you succeed in your new role!
