Body Language and Success

by Mar 22, 2018

Body language is what influences the very first impression you give someone, even before you say anything. It conveys your interpersonal skills and predicts to potential employers how you’ll interact with others. For something that is largely unconscious, it influences so much.

In her article, Carol Kinsey Goman addresses some of the myths associated with body language. Buying into these myths can actually detriment your success.

  • Liars don’t make eye contact: Kinsey-Goman actually suggests the opposite. People who are being less than truthful will often overcompensate and make more eye contact than they normally would.
  • Body language is an effective tool for disguising your true feelings: Kinsey-Goman actually suggests the opposite. This requires so much concentration, that it usually ends up exposing your emotions.

Generally, presenting yourself in a warm and disarming way will get you far. Make eye contact, have a firm handshake, and be friendly!
