First Job in a Professional Setting? Here’s What You Need to Know

by Jun 8, 2018

Entering the workforce as a recent graduate is an exciting time. However, it is important to start your career on the right foot and build a positive reputation. If you are entering your first job in a professional setting, here are some important rules to keep in mind.

Always Be on Time

When you arrive late for work, it gives the impression you don’t care about your job. Your employer designates a start time for a reason, and it’s not up to you to determine whether that start time is unreasonable. Never take it upon yourself to make up rules for your schedule. Always arrive early and ready to get to work.

Check Your Emotions at the Door

No matter what is happening in your personal life or how miserable your morning commute may have been, it’s important to leave your emotions at the door and not let it impact your mood or your work. Everyone has bad days, but you should never take it out on your co-workers, your boss or customers.

Speak Professionally

Cursing, off-color jokes, offensive language and gossip have no place in a professional workplace. Even if you hear your co-workers engaging in unprofessional speech, it doesn’t mean that you should follow suit.  A good rule of thumb in the office is this: If you wouldn’t say it to your grandmother, don’t say it at work.

Don’t Air Dirty Laundry

It is important to be discerning about what you discuss with your co-workers. You can certainly talk about your hobbies, interests and family, but don’t overshare. It is nobody’s business if you are having relationship problems, you partied too hard on Friday night or you’re struggling with a medical issue. It is also wise to avoid potentially controversial topics like politics and religion.

Own up to Mistakes

No one likes to make mistakes, but the truth is, everyone makes them. If you want to build a reputation as a professional, you must own up to your mistakes as soon as you catch them and then work to correct the situation as quickly as possible. Most mistakes can be corrected, especially if you act fast.

Go Above and Beyond

You never want to become known as a person who says, “That’s not my job.” True professionals go above and beyond, and volunteering for projects and tasks – especially tasks no one else wants to do – will go a long way toward building your reputation as a hard worker and a go-getter.
