Networking 101
No matter what field you’re in or what level you work at, networking is key in developing your career. There are more connections in the professional world than people realize, and you never know where your next conversation will lead.
So how do we capitalize on these networking opportunities and make the absolute best of them? In her article here, Sarah Landrum gives some of the best basic tips on how to market yourself during networking events. We’ve highlighted our favorites below:
- Listen well: Networking isn’t all about talking; it’s also about taking the time to listen to others. Being an attentive listener will only make you look good, and you’ll be able to pay attention to potential opportunities. Make sure to respond to what they’re saying, and take the time to ask good questions.
- Have a conversation: You should have your “elevator pitch” ready to go, but remember that this is about making connections. Your interactions with others should be a conversation, not just you giving your speech about yourself. Also, feel free to add in some questions about the person you’re speaking with, and not just career-related ones.
- Show that you’re trustworthy: One of the biggest things a potential employer looks for is someone who is worthy of their trust. Don’t bad mouth your current or previous employer, no matter how bad it actually is. Remember how it sounds to another employer when you complain.
