Every Job or Assignment is an Opportunity for Success

In 2008, a movie titled Slumdog Millionaire hit the big screen and swept the Academy Awards as well as the British, the Critics’ Choice, and Golden Globe awards. The plot was complex and entertaining and centered on a young Indian man from Mumbai who knew so many answers on a televised game show that some actually accused him of cheating. But, as the viewers learn, he was able to reply correctly to each question because of his experiences both good and bad.

The hero not only gets the girl but also wins the grand money prize by getting the final question right!

Employees, particularly if they have been doing the same tasks for a while, tend to view the work as simply a job and not a career opportunity. However, what they don’t realize is that with each situation there is always room to continue to learn, grow and make themselves more marketable and prepared for their next prospect.

For instance, if you are performing a specific task which takes several hours a day to do, why not go home and on your own time research ways to improve the process in order to be more efficient or to save time? If your organization has a large project why not volunteer to come in early or stay late in order to help the team complete the task, particularly if there are opportunities where you will be able to use new software programs, learn new skills, or even gain new knowledge?  If your company or entity offers training options why not take advantage of them? Most employers will welcome your initiative and willingness to learn how to do your own job better or take on new responsibilities as a result of such training.

  • If you are not sure where to start with taking initiative, try reading up on the subject here.
  • If you are looking for ways to shine in your present position, you’ll find some great examples here.
  • If you need some fast tips on how to become more marketable and proactive on the job you can find them here.

If you are on a contract assignment, your staffing firm may be able to get you through the door and provide you with a new opportunity, but the rest is up to you. By being proactive you will get so much more out of the position including continuing on the road to greater professional success!
