Remote Interview is No Time to Play it Casual

by Sep 6, 2019

Savvy would-be employers are taking advantage of the new digital tools at their disposal such as conducting remote vs in-person interviews. The arrangement is not only convenient, but also a time saver for both the employer as well as the job seeking candidate.

While you may be interviewed in the comfort of your own home, don’t take for granted the fact that you are still being interviewed for a professional position.

In order to maximize your chances for success follow a few simple rules.

  • Since most remote or virtual interviews will still involve a face-to-face encounter, appearances do matter.
  • Dress the same as you would if you were having the interview in an office.
  • Be sure to have a pad of paper and pen at the ready, so you can take notes as you’re going along.
  • Make sure you are prepared, do your homework on the entity as position before the encounter.
  • Be sure to ask questions that are pertinent to the job, organization and work involved.
  • Chose a background that is neutral or blank. Employers do not need to see your choices in posters, dishes, or anything else that would detract from the interview.
  • Make sure to sit up straight and keep your eyes focused on the screen or video feed.
  • Do a dry run to see how you and your environment will come across to the interviewer and iron out any technical difficulties beforehand.
  • Set your phone on silent or vibrate because you should not have any interruptions during the session.
  • Make sure to smile, remain professional for the duration of the session and thank the interviewer once it is over.
  • Finally, make to click out or end the session before speaking, just in case, the other party is still on.

If you follow these simple tips your chances of acing the interview go way up!
