Creating Positive Change In Your Workplace Community
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Rome wasn’t built in a day. You’ve doubtless encountered these adages a million times before! But have you considered the ways they apply to your workplace? It may feel like taking on the task of creating positive change in your communities while both on the clock and off is too overwhelming to even begin–but don’t panic! Start small. Read on for experienced perspectives on how to do just that.
Even though the suggestions presented by the pros at flare are through the lens of an employer’s point of view, they offer up a quick and easy step that you as an employee can use to contribute to your workplace’s sense of community: “Recognition. Saying well done is a powerful motivator…Making recognition a standard part of your modus operandi will help create a sense of belonging and appreciation which is a great foundation for building workplace community.” Everyone loves getting compliments. Offering up praise is a simple way to boost a colleague’s mood. And smiles are contagious! Taking a moment to show that you’ve noticed a co-worker’s efforts will have lasting positive effects on your workplace community, which will in turn inspire your coworkers and employers a like to seek out ways to make greater change in the world beyond.
Lynette Reed at business.com also provides insights into a way to inspire those around you in your professional environment to take positive strides: “Match your words and actions. If you commit to completing a project on time, then complete the task when designated, or communicate changes when necessary. The saying ‘under promise and over deliver’ offers a good rule of thumb for how to keep words and actions aligned. The value added to matching words and actions includes increased authenticity and accountability for the service and support of your organization.” Be someone your community can depend on. Engaging in clear communication demonstrates respect for your co-workers as well as showing that you are a thoughtful employee who takes ownership of their responsibilities. Remember, too, that no one is perfect and everyone has the occasional mess up–it’s how you respond in the face of those mistakes that makes the difference. Matching your actions with your words demonstrates your commitment to creating a stronger workplace environment.
It’s also important to keep in mind that whatever you put into your workplace, you’ll get out of it. If you want to make a change in the communities around you, don’t just sit back and wait for change to happen: instead, play an active role in improving your organization’s professional environment. And it just takes a single step to get started. Visit us again tomorrow for our Feel Good Friday feature on even more ways to bring your community together to bring about change.
