Tip 8 for Respect, Productivity & Notice at Work: Speak-Up

by | Feb 8, 2019

If you are looking to elevate your notice at work, then it is important to speak up. In her article on becoming more respected, productive, and impressive at work, Shana Lebowitz’s highlights the importance of letting your opinions be heard, especially during meetings. When speaking up it is also important to make sure that your input is constructive and conscientious.  Lebowitz draws on Jenna Lyons, the former president of J.Crew Group Inc. to elaborate on this.

Jenna Lyons observes that “Opinions aren’t reserved for those in the corner office. Find your voice, and make sure to balance your input; you should be contributing roughly equal parts complimentary support of others with thoughtful, constructive criticism. And never be afraid to pitch an idea; we all have good ones, and we all have bad ones.”  It is important to remember diplomacy when speaking up as you may be right in what you say during a meeting, but through a lack in tack caused offense to colleagues. Meeting environments are most productive when everyone is comfortable sharing and your inputs should encourage rather than discourage this.
