How To Lead Through Positivity

by Jun 11, 2020

It’s easy to get stressed out over the course of your workday. And though that may not feel great in the moment, it’s actually a sign that you care about the work that you’re doing! A great way to dial down any professional stress is to reframe it through that positive lens. It can also feel easier to help others than it is to help yourself; you’re in luck, because today’s tips will help you connect to your colleagues by displaying leadership qualities through your positivity. The pros we’ve turned to below offer up excellent ways to do just that.

First up is this tip from Communication, Workplace and Team Strategist, published Author and Speaker Michelle Burke on how to act like a leader in your workplace while letting your positivity shine: “Model positive and respectful behavior in your interactions – be accountable, don’t play the blame game, encourage an environment where it’s okay to make mistakes and move forward.” Increase the brightness of your professional environment by pairing positivity with respect. Owning up to your mistakes and figuring out a way to move forward from them will help take pressure off of your bosses and colleagues. Another way to think about this suggestion is to be the change you wish to see in the world of your workplace! You can boost everyone’s morale by not making your problems their problems.

We also love this suggestion from professional wellness expert Coralie Sawruk on how to spread that sense of brightness throughout your workplace community: “Give Yourself Some Credit. You may have noticed that positive stories have a very short shelf-life, while bad news lingers. That’s because humans have actually evolved with a natural tendency to focus on the bad. At work or in life, criticism is taken to heart more than positive feedback. We all tend to focus on our own shortcomings, rather than the tasks that have successfully been checked off the list. You’re not alone, though: even the most successful people tend to focus on their faults. The creator of the most famous painting in the world and all around ‘renaissance man’, Leonardo Da Vinci, reportedly died bemoaning the fact that he didn’t produce higher quality work. No matter that he’d made an incredible impact on the world, helping to advance multiple areas in science and the arts! Next time you spot yourself engaging in negative talk, pause. Can you lead by example and promote positivity in the workplace by giving yourself some credit and appreciation? Can you show others there’s difference between being positive…and bragging?” Yes, you can! Ground your excitement over your successes in specific examples–and make sure to also celebrate the successes of those around you. After all, you’re all in this together.

Set the example that you want everyone to follow; take inspiration from the lighter days all around you and let that bright attitude infuse your work. Your inner sunshine provides a guiding path for your colleagues, which is a surefire way to impress your employers! Join us again tomorrow as we take a look at even more ways to boost your brightness and end your week on a positive note with our newest Feel Good Friday.
