Finding Clarity In Any Professional Setting
Today we’re examining both digital and physical ways to help you gain mental clarity. Whether you’re working remotely or in person, we know that technology can often come into play throughout your work day. And we also know it can be very easy to stray from your professional tasks, especially during these rapidly changing times. Allow yourself to let go of the need to be completely up to speed at all times. Instead focus on what it is that you can control. This will allow you to more easily and clearly concentrate. To help you do just that, check out these today’s tricks from the pros that we’re highlighting below.
To start, don’t miss this high tech tip from Alec Biedrzycki at HubSpot: “Make it harder for yourself to mess around on social media. Social media is designed to make it easy for you to open and browse quickly. At work, though, this convenience can be the detriment of your productivity. To counteract your social networks’ ease of use during work hours, remove them from your browser shortcuts and, according to Fast Company, log out of every account. You might even consider working primarily in a private or, if you’re using Chrome, an ‘Incognito’ browser window. This ensures you stay signed out of all your accounts and each web search you conduct doesn’t autocomplete the word you’re typing. It’s a guarantee that you won’t be tempted into taking too many social breaks during the day.” And it’s easy to let something that starts out as a short break figuratively snowball into a major distraction. Think of logging out not as a punishment but as a way to reward yourself with a mental vacation from digital clutter. Your goal while on the clock is to make it easier for yourself to work, and re-framing the act of logging out in a positive light will also help you maintain a sense of positive that with buoy you no matter the circumstances that come your way.
We also love this suggestion from Sara Marie Hall at SUCCESS that comes in handy no matter where you’re working: “Declutter. Whether you work in a home office, kitchen or living room, if there’s ‘stuff’ around that reminds you of your household chores, your eyes will go there and you’ll get distracted. Whenever you work from home, claim a clutter-free zone. This will help you stay focused on your workload and remain more aligned with an in-office experience.” While this tip most directly applies to those working from home, you can utilize this method anywhere! If you’re working in a physical office space, there are always items for you to organize, such as pens and notepads. Organizing your physical space will allow you to more quickly access whatever it is you need, so you won’t have to take up time and mental energy by looking for lost items. You can also apply this idea to your online space! If you ever find yourself with “downtime” on-site, a productive way to use that time is to declutter your inbox and your desktop. Taking a moment to declutter will help save you time down the line when you need to use a bit of extra brainpower to adjust to any new professional situation that arises.
Above all, be proactive. Make sure you’re actively choosing to engage in actions that will increase your mental clarity instead of solely reacting to life’s circumstances. We know that that’s not an easy task. So don’t beat yourself up if you can’t snap your fingers and immediately concentrate. Instead, remember that finding concentration is a skill to be practiced. And practicing each and every day will take you closer to proficiency, one step at a time. If you need further inspiration and concrete steps to take, you can always come back to our blog.
